Pauly Beds handcrafts natural beds since 1838. It's one of the very few in the world that does not use any type of latex or memory foam to fill in its beds or top mattresses (toppers). The reason? Latex and memory foam are not sustainable. After 5 years or more, they will start to crack. They absorb humidity creating mold and unhealthy environment. Comfort will not be the same and you will need to purchase a new one. The holes in the latex do not go through one side to the other, so it does not mean it breathes naturally as cotton, silk, cashmere, wool and 100% horsehair.
Memory foam is very flammable, so the textiles need to be treated with fire retardants such as PBDE, which we will breathe during the time we sleep. Cashmere and wool are natural flame-retardants so Pauly uses these materials in its top mattresses and beds.
Foams can feel quite warm, as they do not regulate your temperature naturally. There are some mattress varieties with cooling gels packed in plastic. More expensive and durable materials such as cashmere, wool or silk, are great natural temperature regulators. They are breathable and absorbing fibers with many positive benefits. They are naturally anti-static and don’t build up bacteria or mites.
Latex claims to be natural, biodegradable and recyclable. Is it?
Did you know that in Sweden we do not recycle ANY mattress ? The recycling centers do not accept to recycle them. They all get burned regardless of their content. With a population of 10 million, we burn approximately 400,000 beds/mattresses per year without counting hotel beds.
In Sweden, except for Hästens, we do not know of another brand in the market that does not use some type of latex or foam as a layer in their toppers or mattresses. Compare the quality and prices!
