Desde entonces, Stenberg ha estado interesado en la importancia del sueño, especialmente la falta de sueño. Ella menciona especialmente un momento memorable.

- Hace veinte años, recibimos los primeros informes emocionantes de la investigadora Eve van Cauter en Chicago sobre cómo la falta de sueño puede alterar nuestro equilibrio de azúcar y resistencia a la insulina.

Van Cauter realizó un experimento en el que hombres jóvenes y sanos durante cinco días acortaron su sueño a cuatro horas por noche. El descubrimiento sorprendió a Stenberg. Los niveles de insulina en los sujetos de prueba aumentaron.

- Me costaba creer lo que escuchaba, porque la falta de sueño hasta ese momento siempre se había minimizado.

Entonces se pensó que el que menos duerme es un superhumano, el más fuerte y el más sabio.

- Los líderes empresariales exitosos, los políticos y otros se jactaban de lo poco que dormían.

- Muchas personas tuvieron dificultades para creer que algo tan modesto como la falta de sueño podría causar trastornos tan graves en el cuerpo. Durante mi carrera, las actitudes han cambiado y la importancia del sueño se ha tomado más en serio.
